Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) system has great development prospects in microwave and millimeter wave wireless access networks. Optical millimeter wave generation technology is the key technology of RoF system. The traditional millimeter wave generation technology applied in the current communication system has high cost, short signal transmission distance and poor anti-interference ability. In contrast, optical millimeter wave generation technology has significant advantages in frequency flexibility, signal anti-interference ability and transmission cost. This paper describes the commonly used optical millimeter wave generation technology, including direct modulation, optical heterodyne and external modulation. This paper describes the basic principles, advantages and disadvantages of several technologies and research progress in recent years. Finally, the challenges of optical millimeter wave generation technology are given.
