I am Hsing-Yu and I am working in R&D Office, National Facility for Ultra Precision Surfaces (NFUPS), UK (http://goo.gl/7SOrLL). My PhD is in Astronomical Instrument Group, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University College London (2015 QS world university ranking: 5 http://goo.gl/V5Shbv). I am supervised by Prof David Walker and my work involves investing an intelligent automatic process to accelerate the current fabrication chain to process meter-scale optics for the £900 million European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) project, under the European Southern Observation (http://goo.gl/PGbWTd).
I started work at R&D Office, NFUPS, UK in December 2012, on the fabrication of meter-scale optics for the E-ELT project. One important aspect of my work is improving the current state-of-the-art manufacturing developments by adding an efficient automatic process that can achieve a faster and less expensive manufacturing process-chain. This work is supported by Optics, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Statistics and Software Coding. This will require little or even no significant R&D before it can contribute to our processing chain on meter-scale optics.
In addition to the experience in NFUPS, I have 9 years of experience in optical coating, optical design, and measurement. I researched optical coating for fiber couplers for a Sirius project during my undergraduate studies (2003-2007). I worked in the optical engineering industry for optical design and testing from 2006 to 2012. My responsibility was to define optical requirements for commercial optical systems, conduct optical designs, tolerances, assembly and testing. Some examples of the commercial optical products which I had worked on include mini-projector, 100-800 megapixel mobile phone camera lenses (patent), zoom lenses, and f-theta lens for microscopy.
