Intelligent metasurface recently has shown powerful electromagnetic (EM) manipulation properties, which can be widely applied in wireless communication and radiation protection for increasingly complex environments. However, the conventional metasurface can hardly be deployed in real-world scenarios since they require manpower to achieve complex EM responses. Great challenges still remain to accomplish continuous coordination control tasks. In this paper, an intelligent metasurface with self-adaptive power recognition and EM manipulation is proposed. With the assistance of a radio frequency (RF) power sensor and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) module, the proposed metasurface can perceive the intensity of the incident power and subsequently make a corresponding response to complete the predetermined EM functions in terms of the ever-changing incident EM waves. Through experimental validation, the self-adaption ability of the proposed metasurface has been demonstrated, showing the flexible function switching among transmission, absorption, and reflection. Hence, the proposed intelligent metasurface system has promising potential for diverse applications, including smart radome, dynamic camouflage material, and intelligent absorber.
