The literature abounds with texts on the subject of lasers. Any one book could provide a beginning graduate student with the tools necessary to understand lasers and their interaction with matter. However, the treatment of ultrashort lasers in such books is cursory, if included at all, since the intricacies of femtosecond pulse generation go beyond what is commonly considered fundamental.
