All blocks of the given image were divided into six bands, with the first band containing only the dc coefficient, the second band containing the first five ac coefficients, the third band the next nine ac coefficients, and so on. Figure 1 shows this division of DCT coefficients in bands. The number and code size of all DCT coefficients and various EOB markers were calculated. The dc and ac coefficients and all EOB markers in tested images accounted for are 7.3%, 75.5%,and 17.2% of coded symbols, respectively, whereas the EOB(0) alone contributed 15.6% of the coded symbols.
