Abstract
The estimation of the angular position of an object and the evaluation of image quality are considered for an active tracking system consisting of an agile scanning transmitter and an imaging or nonimaging receiver. We estimate angular positions of point objects and derive bounds on tracking accuracy. We examine the effect of shot noise and illumination beam jitter on angular position estimation and define various quality measures in the context of position estimation. Examples of algorithms for position estimation with accuracies approaching theoretical bounds are presented.
