Abstract
We describe a new method for measuring the shape and position of high-velocity surfaces and shock fronts. Our method involves the use of an optical pin quite similar in appearance to the coaxial, self-shorting, electrical pin commonly used. The ionization of xenon gas in the pin tip produces a light signal that is transmitted by a fiberoptic bundle and recorded using a streak camera. We discuss preliminary data from impact tests indicating a pin signal response of 1 to 2 ns.
