Abstract
A vertical water jet leaving a nozzle and penetrating downward into a water body stored in a large container of plexiglas is investigated by using high speed photography. Due to the viscosity and movement of the jet, the front and periphery surfaces of the jet carry ambient air into the water. The air in the water forms bubbles around the jet, which reflect light and made the jet visible in the water. The water jet, impinging on the free water surface and penetrating into the water, causes the change of surface tension on the water surface, which produces the water surface oscillation. The oscillation of the water surface has two effects on the jet flow in the water: (a) Separating the jet front from the jet body. (b) Causing the jet flow to be unstable.
