Abstract
The x-ray spectrum of a diagnostic x-ray unit has a fundamental influence on the performance of the unit, i.e., the required patient exposure and image quality. This article describes a method of obtaining approximate spectral distributions from computer analysis of ionization chamber measurements of attenuation of the beam by a standard material. The results are compared with measurements made under identical conditions with a lithium drifted silicon solid state spectrometer. The value of attenuation analysis data for radiologic physics calculations and possible modifications of the technique are discussed.
