3 September 2015 Simulating optical system performance with three-dimensional scenes

Abstract
Simulated images provide insight into optical system performance. If the Point Spread Function (PSF) is assumed spatially invariant, then the simulated image is the convolution of the PSF with the object scene. If the PSF varies across the field, multiple field points are sampled and interpolated to give the PSF. Simulated images are then assembled from the individual PSFs. These techniques assume a 2D planar object. We extend the image simulations to 3D scenes. The PSF now depends on the field point location and distance in object space. We investigate 3D scene simulation and examine approximations that reduce computation time.
