Abstract
A new procedure is developed to identify damping in a dynamic system as damping matrices in the equation of motion from the dynamic stiffness matrix, which is obtained by inverting the measured frequency response function matrix. It is shown that the method provides the most direct and shortest path to finding dampened matrices. The procedure is applied to a theoretical example and two real structures for its validation, which also reveals unique measurement and signal processing issues related to the technique. Potential applications and possible improvement of the identification method are discussed.
