Abstract
A multipurpose satellite was launched into geostationary orbit for the Government of India in 1982. This vehicle, INSAT-lA, was designed to provide various communications functions and carry visible and infrared sensors designed to provide imagery of meteorological phenomena. The ground station necessary to process this remotely sensed environmental data was designed and built by System Development Corporation of Santa Monica, California. This paper describes the design requirements of this data processing system and introduces its hardware and software architecture. The interactive image processing techniques and data sampling and calibration algorithms that were employed are identified.
