Abstract
Linear and nonlinear inversion methods have been developed to image the velocity and attenuation. In recent years, efficient ray tracing techniques and high speed computing facilities have made the application of nonlinear inversion practical on a personal computer. By combining the travel time information and the amplitude and frequency information of geophysical data such as radar data and seismic data, both velocity and attenuation can be simultaneously inverted. Ray tracing accounts for most of the computing time of the nonlinear inversion. However, the same ray tracing results can be used for both velocity and attenuation inversion, thus the simultaneous inversion does not take much longer time than velocity inversion alone. Inverted attenuation results are more accurate than those produced by ordinary straight-ray attenuation tomography due to the consideration of bending rays. Two approaches, one based on a single geophysical survey and the other on repeated surveys, are developed and tested using synthetic and field radar data. The major advantage of these two approaches is that neither of them involves estimation of source radiation pattern, receiver coupling, and geometrical spreading that are very difficult to measure accurately.
