11 December 1998 One-movement fixed-exit channel-cut monochromator

Abstract
A fixed-exit monochromator, which requires only a single rotation, is described. It is based on a Si-111 crystal which has profiled reflecting surfaces and an undistorted lattice. The purpose of the surface profile is to keep the beam exit fixed, while the monochromator needs only a rotational movement. The monochromator must have a negligible effect on the phase space of the outgoing beam, to avoid astigmatic errors when microfocusing the monochromatic beam. The influence of the crystal on the phase space has been calculated to confirm that it is compatible with the production of a microspot of about 20 micrometer diameter using subsequent focusing optics, which is a basic requirement for the object illumination in the imaging type X-ray microscope at the experimental station.The performance of the monochromator in terms of bandwidth, throughput and stability of the beam position has been calculated and measured. Limitations in terms of energy range and acceptable thermal load are discussed.
