Abstract
The difficult task of target recognition through thermal sights is critical to battlefield success and reduction of fratricide. All final decisions to shoot or not shoot reside with the human operator. Until now, little insight into effective human visual discrimination was applied to the thermal signature identification task. A new multimedia training software was developed at NVESD which trains thermal signatures based upon cognitive neuroscientific understanding of object recognition. An experiment with 109 soldiers at Ft. Hood, Texas indicates that the software effectively trains the shapes and locations of emissive sources (mainly engines and exhaust hot spots) of tactical ground vehicles, significantly improving combat vehicle recognition. Incorporation of object recognition theory into Assisted Target Recognition (ATR) implementations may yield significant improvements for detection and recognition of vehicle targets.
