Abstract
Strong scattering models which assume uniform distribution of the phase of the scatterers do not provide an adequate description of the phase of the scatterers do not provide an adequate description for the sonar scattering from the sea bed. The generalized-K and the homodyned-K have been proposed as models for weak scattering when the number of steps in the random walk fluctuate according to a negative binomial distribution. As a prerequisite to experimental analysis of sonar data as a case of weak scattering a review is carried out of the two models.
