Abstract
To our best knowledge, longitudinal magneto-optic effects in ferrofluids are generally measured under a steady magnetic field. We present an original polarimetric method to measure the circular birefringence (CB) and the circular dichroism (CD) of magnetic liquid materials placed in low sinusoidal magnetic field HM cos(Omega) t. A lot of results obtained with ferrofluids synthesized by the coprecipitation method. CoFe2O4, MnFe2O4 and (gamma) -Fe2O3, in dibutyl phthalate, diethylene glycol, glycerol or water are given. Measurements of CB and CD versus magnetic field, wavelength (500 nm to 1600 nm), frequency (1 Hz to 50 kHz) and temperature (253 K to 373 K) are reported. A clue for the interpretation of the magnetically induced circular anisotropy is given, which reinforced the hypothesis of the field induced aggregation of single particles into strings.
