Abstract
Although today the focus within the broadband communications framework is mainly on data communications for business customers and asymmetric services for residential customers (e.g. VoD) the interest for new services is growing. The paper considers broadband multimedia symmetric services for residential customers and provides examples of their possible use. Four network architectures for supporting such services are then illustrated and a comparison is made among them in order to underline the related main points of strength and weakness.
