Abstract
This paper illustrates a step-by-step approach to designing an example multimedia system using our periodic pipelined design and evaluation framework. The periodic pipelined framework provides a systematic approach to designing scalable, distributed heterogeneous systems whose timing properties can be strictly controlled and analyzed. The approach exploits the natural pipelined execution pattern found in a large number of continuous-data applications executing over heterogenous distributed resources. This paper illustrates how to model the example multimedia system using the framework and how to make design decisions such that the system's end-to-end timing requirements can be met. Specifically, we focus on how to assign pipeline stage rates to model the specific set of signal processing rates required in the example system. Finally, this paper provides timing analysis results and makes explicit the fundamental trade-offs in designing this example system.
