Abstract
This paper presents the design and performance of an optical measurement system (OMS) which is used to measure the position of a magnetically suspended element as part of the feedback control system for the NASA Langley Large Gap Magnetic Suspension System (LGMSS). A new processing architecture which is to be implemented in the OMS to increase the rate at which position information is made available to the LGMSS controller is also discussed. The OMS consists of multiple linear charge-coupled device cameras which detect small infrared light emitting diode targets embedded in the surface of a magnetically suspended cylinder. The OMS estimates the position and attitude of the cylinder in six- degrees-of-freedom and supplies this information to the LGMSS control computer at a rate of 40 samples per second. Experiments have been run to evaluate the performance of the OMS. The accuracy of the OMS was evaluated using a static test model of the cylinder. Test results show that the one sigma (one standard deviation) in the OMS estimates of cylinder position and attitude are approximately +/- 0.001 inch in x and y, +/- 0.0005 inch in z, +/- 0.005 degree in pitch and yaw, and +/- 0.01 degree in roll.
