Abstract
In order to measure the velocity distribution of a gyrotron electron beam an experimental set-up based on the method of retarding fields has been constructed. On an electron beam of a magnetron injection gun which has been used in a 140 GHz, TE0,3 gyrotron a velocity spread of ov_i- ±15% has been found up to currents of about 10 A. Above that, the spread Syl_ did increase up to ±30% at 20 A. The experimental values are significantly higher than the values calculated with EGUN. The measured value of the average velocity ratio, however, is in reasonable agreement with numerical results.
