An infrared polarimeter system for measurement of the plasma current density in Alcator C-Mod tokamak has been fabricated and tested. The system utilizes a cw CO2 laser at a wavelength of 10.6 ilm. Polarization-modulation techniques have been used to achieve the high sensitivity required for the measurement. The preliminary results of a feasibility study of the system for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) are also presented.
