Abstract
It seems that the dental profession will not embrace the laser for dentistry until hard tissue applications are developed. To date the lasers that are available for dentists in the clinical setting have little scientific basis for use on dental hard tissues. Before a viable laser method becomes available for dental hard tissues, basic research on the correlation of incident fluence to hard tissue removal must be studied. In this paper we propose a method of determining the exact size and shape of the defect created by an Er:YAG laser and correlate the size, depth, and volume of the defect relative to the fluence, spot size and number of pulses of the Er:YAG laser.
