Abstract
Previous studies have shown that the `disector' is a 3-D probe which can sample particles uniformly in 3-D space, and that the mean characteristics of the disector sample is an unbiased estimate of the same mean characteristics of all the particles in the reference space, if the disector is `uniform randomly' probed in the space. But to date the technique has been limited to manual operations for particle counting. As a 3-D sampling tool, its potential has not been fully realized due to the difficulties mainly associated with its manual implementation and the subsequent measurements on the resultant disector sample. In this paper, we present an image processing algorithm which can establish a disector sample of convex particles from a set of serial sections. The algorithm enables the automatic implementation of Cavalieri's principle in the environment of an image analyzer and may therefore lead to a direct measurement of particle size distribution.
