Abstract
We present a computational method for determining the characteristic views of general quadric-surfaced solids. Each characteristic view (CV) is a representative view of a characteristic-view domain (CVD). The viewing space of a solid is fully described by its CVs and the CVD graph (or aspect graph) which shows the interrelationships among the CVDs. The paper discusses the feasibility of using the CV concept for 3D object recognition and pose estimation. An illustrative example is included.
