Abstract
In recent years, the increasing number of motor vehicles in China and the limited road infrastructure resources have resulted in significant challenges. Intersections play a vital role in regulating urban traffic, and effective dynamic signal timing is crucial for improving intersection efficiency and overall traffic network performance. This paper focuses on studying the optimization of dynamic signal timing for a single intersection. It proposes a dynamic signal timing model based on multi-objective optimization, establishing an optimization function that considers capacity, delay time, and the number of stops as key performance indicators. To solve the model, an improved hybrid algorithm combining Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Algorithm is employed. The model's performance is evaluated through joint simulation experiments using PTV-VISSIM and MATLAB software. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed timing optimization model outperforms the classical Webster model. Specifically, it reduces the maximum queuing length of vehicles at the intersection by 49% and decreases fuel consumption by 25%. Consequently, the proposed model significantly improves intersection control effectiveness.
