Abstract
In this paper, an interval optimization method for uncertain structures is proposed. To obtain the lightest structure, a combination of interval mathematics and optimization algorithm are utilized. The uncertain parameters of the structure are described as interval parameters, and the upper and lower bounds of displacement constraints are derived by transforming the uncertain structural equations with the interval expansion. In order to obtain the optimal solution of the uncertain structure, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with dynamic time-varying inertia parameters is applied to optimize the structure, and effectively integrate it with the interval method. Based on the methodology, the optimal solution intervals of the structure can be obtained. This method provides a new approach for optimal design of uncertain structures.
