Abstract
Optical flow, proposed by Gibson, refers to the flow of a moving three-dimensional scene in a time-varying two-dimensional image sequence due to variations in brightness patterns. Recently, a number of research results have shown that optical flow can be used for three-dimensional micro/nano-scale deformation measurement. This paper introduces the development of optical flow and its application from signal science to three-dimensional measurement, expounds the derivation process of the basic equation of optical flow, explains and evaluates classical optical flow algorithms and mathematical models, and takes the three-dimensional deformation measurement of fiber-optical image inverter as an example to discuss the measurement accuracy of optical flow algorithm. Matlab is used as the simulation tool. The in-plane displacement is calculated by the Brox and the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. Then combined with the wedge surface model, the out-of-plane displacement is estimated. It is concluded that both the Brox algorithm and the DIC method can obtain smaller errors at larger out-of-plane displacements (y∈[130pixel, 300pixel]); The results of DIC method fluctuate and the error increases at small out-of-plane displacements (y∈[1pixel, 130pixel]), while the results of Brox remain smooth. The accuracy of the optical flow algorithm for 3D measurement is higher than that of DIC in the case of small displacement.
