Abstract
As the most common dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, has brought burden to millions to people, and will continue to do so in the coming decades. Patients and their families are suffering from this uncurable disease. Apart from developing treatments for AD, improving the diagnosis by making it earlier is also significant to the patients and society. Identifying the risk factors for AD and utilizing the biomarkers to examine AD are perhaps two strategies to enable early diagnosis. This paper has reviewed current research and summarized the existing proposed risk factors and biomarkers from both CSF and serum. The risk factors include cardiovascular diseases, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition, which may support identifying the people with higher risks of developing AD. Those higher-risk groups should be encouraged to participate in AD evaluation earlier. Certain biomarkers from CSF and serum may yield indicative results about AD diagnosis, which have the potential to be part of a more routine examination program.
