Abstract
Delineating restricted areas or roads against vehicles has been a widely used method to reduce the contribution of heavyduty trucks to pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particle matter (PM) in cities. However, the improvement of traffic restriction on air quality is rarely studied through real monitoring. By investigating the variations of air quality at the roadside and national monitoring sites, this study investigates the impact of the restriction against heavy-duty trucks on the air quality around a typical port transportation corridor. During the restricted period, the average hourly traffic volume of trucks was decreased by 88.6%. For the pollutants near the roadside, the average hourly particle number (PN) concentrations of PN2.5 and PN10 were both reduced by 43.4%, and the average hourly mass concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were decreased by 16.4%, 31.5%, 50.6%, 11.6%, and 22.2%, respectively. For the pollutants at the national monitoring point, the average hourly mass concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, NO, NO2, and SO2 in the downwind direction were decreased by 64.8%, 60.3%, 63.8%, 27.6%, and 28.6%, respectively. Obviously, the restriction of heavy-duty trucks can effectively improve the air quality along and around the arterial road.
