Abstract
There are many researches on the relationship between transportation infrastructure construction and urban economy. Most of them believe that investment in transport infrastructure can promote urban development and economic growth. This paper studies the feedback mechanism between traditional waterway construction and economic development. However, the empirical results show that the construction of the Yangtze Waterway does increase GDP, but not by increasing shipping volume. The reasons for this phenomenon are analyzed, and it may be that the existing waterway restricts the navigation of large ships, or that the waterway transportation has been replaced by other transportation modes due to the rapid development of other transportation modes. Water transport has always been less economical than other modes of transport. A new feedback mechanism is also proposed.
