Abstract
Modern water systems are augmented by the application of advanced information and communications technology. However, this trend has brought with it the problem of coordinating the flow of data between the various subsystems. This paper argues that Building Information Modelling (BIM) software can be used to improve interoperability and form the basis of a smart water management system (SWMS). The paper begins with an introduction that outlines the problem of the “information island” in current smart water management systems and suggests BIM as a possible solution. The Literature Review describes current research on smart water management systems, the current use of BIM, and then identifies how BIM has the potential to improve the integration of the components of smart water management systems.
