Abstract
We are testing the assumption that air pollution may increase the risk of negative outcomes at birth. The study looked at live births recorded in the Czech Republic in 1991 (n = 108,173). All monitors in this district measured maternal exposure to Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), total suspended particulate matter (TSP) and Nitrous Oxides (NOx) during each trimester of pregnancy as arithmetic averages. The author included the test of low birth weight, prematurity, and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) to determine the relationship between air pollution and birth risk. We mainly use odd ratio (OR) as the method to test the relationship between each of three kinds of air pollution and several risks of birth. The OR of three kinds of air pollution in every three trimesters has been tested. We show that low birth weight and prematurity were associated with SO2 and slightly lower than TSP; NOx has no relationship. We also show that air pollution could bring more effects during the first trimester than the other two trimesters, and the gestational age could limit air pollution. This paper could bring benefits to the future exploration of the relationship between air pollution and birth risk.
