Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to determine spatiotemporal dynamics of the red blood cell flow in the brain capillaries. To this end, two-photon microscopy was used to concurrently image blood plasma and blood cells expressing fluorescent proteins in the anesthetized rat cortex. Kymographic analysis showed that flow velocity of the red blood cells varied at the bifurcations of brain capillaries, indicating that the bifurcations serve as resistance for the red blood cell flow. Our results further suggest that interactions between the red blood cells and capillary lumen contribute to resistance to capillary flow.
