In visible light communications (VLC), besides assisting the data transmission while the direct link is blocked, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can adopt spatial modulations (SM) to superimpose its own modulated data on the reflected light signals, leading to an increased overall system throughput. A straight-forward method to perform SM using RIS is named RIS enabled SM (RIS-SM), where the RIS elements are divided into groups and only one of them are activated during each transmission process based on the data to be transmitted. However, the performance of RIS-SM is greatly affected by channel correlation, leading to higher bit error rates (BER). State-of-the-art approach, named RIS enabled receiver SM (RIS-RSM), allows all RIS elements to reflect signals, but only one of the multiple PD receivers is activated due to the spatial modulation design. Although RIS-RSM reduces the impact of channel correlation, its data rate in the spatial domain is limited due to the number of receivers used, lacking the flexibility in using best suitable RIS elements as in RIS-SM. In this paper, we propose a joint transmitter-and-receiver SM architecture for the RIS enabled VLC systems, named as RIS-JtSM, where spatial modulation takes place at both the RIS elements and the PD receivers. The reflected light signals received by the PD receivers contain three data streams that can be decoded in a joint manner: one distinct stream is from the light source, and two other coupled steams that are spatially modulated at the RIS elements and the PD receiver simultaneously. These streams are jointly decoded by the receiver using maximum-likelihood detections (MLD). We derive an upper bound for the BER of RIS-JtSM to evaluate its performance, and simulation results verify the tightness of our analytical upper bound in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. In addition, simulation results show the superior BER performance of RIS-JtSM compared with RIS-SM and RIS-RSM under the same overall data rate and mean emitted light power. To reduce the complexity of MLD, we propose a selection based MLD (S-MLD) method, which decodes the spatially modulated data first, and then performs the detection of the other two streams in successively. Compared with MLD, S-MLD can reduce the detection complexity to 1/N²_r (with N_r the number of PDs) while maintaining near-optimal BER performance. This is the first attempt in studying a general joint transmitter-and-receiver SM design for RIS enchanted VLC systems, and in the future, to ensure the real impact of RIS-JtSM thorough evaluations using Monte-Carlo simulations under practical indoor VLC fading channel models with moving receivers should be carried on.

The channel capacity of free space optical (FSO) communications is sensitive to the atmosphere turbulences, and therefore the application of FSO in the 6G backhaul transmissions faces big challenges, especially in foggy environments. To overcome the channel fading challenge while leveraging the benefits of ultrahigh-bandwidth FSO links, radio frequency (RF) links are still needed, and the hybrid RF and FSO network with parallel links has gained significant attention in recent years. State-of-the-art studies on applying parallel RF and FSO links using hard switching (HS) methods to tackle atmospheric turbulences have shown to be suboptimal if the switching speed is not fast enough to adapt to channel conditions. One effective way to overcome the HS limitations is to utilize adaptive combining (AC) where the FSO link is kept active at all times while the RF link is activated only when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the FSO link is below a certain threshold value, called AC-Solo. AC-Solo schemes have been studied only for the simple point-to-point direct link cases without relays, limiting its application to 6G network with user mobilities. For the transmitter of a hybrid RF and FSO network to serve receivers at different locations, a relay node using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), named RISHS, has also been proposed. However, either AC-Solo or RIS-HS scheme has its drawbacks. In this paper, we propose a RIS-aided parallel RF and FSO network architecture by adopting adaptive combing, called RIS-AC. For the RIS-assisted RF link in RIS-AC, we adopt the Nakagami-m distribution to accurately capture the channel fading effects. For the RIS-assisted FSO link in RIS-AC, we consider various practical factors, including foggy attenuation, pointing errors, and an atmospheric turbulence model using the Gamma-Gamma distribution. At the receiver of RIS-AC, a maximal-ratio-combining (MRC) method is employed to jointly detect the combined FSO and RF signals from the RIS node. To evaluate the performance of our proposed RIS-AC, we first derive analytical expressions for the probability density functions (PDFs) against the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Furthermore, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probabilities (OPs) of RIS-AC based on the PDFs. Simulation results validate our analytical results, and we can see that for an outage probability of 1E-2, RIS-AC has coding gains of 4dB and 2dB compared with AC-Solo and RIS-HS, respectively. The results highlight the superiority of RIS-AC in the hybrid RF-FSO system.

Channeled modulation polarization imaging technology can obtain full polarization information of targets through a single frame of image, with advantages such as compact, low cost, and without electric rotating accessories. It has important application value in remote sensing, biomedical, national defense, and so on. The key point of channeled modulation polarization imaging technology is to modulate the four Stokes parameters that characterize polarization to different carried frequencies through amplitude modulation, and then use the frequency domain to separate the four two-dimensional Stokes parameters. Different channels are intercepted by a bandpass filter and subjected to inverse Fourier transform, which can achieve four two-dimensional distribution pictures of the Stokes parameters. Interference is the core of this technology, which is achieved through birefringent crystals or spectroscopic interferometers. After splitting, interference occurs in the focal plane, generating carrier frequency. However, a serious problem has been troubling researchers in this field, which is how to design birefringent crystals to achieve amplitude modulation of Stokes parameters. The amplitude of the interference fringes of the beams needs to be divided corresponds one-to-one with the Stokes parameter after interference. The current spectroscopic design mainly relies on experience and luck, lacking unified standards, which will affect the efficiency of system design. To solve this problem, relying on the representation of the electric field vector of light, the mathematical expression of Stokes parameters and the corresponding relationship with the spectral results are analyzed in reverse. Then, based on the physical meaning of Stokes parameters, phase modulation is used to achieve the representation of certain parameters for the sum of light intensities and the representation of certain parameters for the difference in light intensities. Ultimately, a correspondence is formed between different spectroscopic results and the detected polarization parameters and proposed modulation criteria for channeled modulation by linking the physical meaning and mathematical model of Stokes parameters. On the one hand, this study is beneficial for the targeted design of channeled modulation polarization imaging technology in different application scenarios for different parameter detection requirements, and on the other hand, it can guide the design of optical systems for different spectral requirements in birefringent crystal design, making the design of this technology more standardized.

In recent years, infrared dim-target detection has emerged as a pivotal area of research. However, most existing detection methodologies focus on single-spectral imagery. Owing to the optical diffraction limit, the image resolution obtained from different detection bands under the same conditions varies significantly. Single-spectral infrared imagery offers limited target and background features, failing to capture a comprehensive representation of the environment and thus struggling with target detection in complex backgrounds. Although multispectral image fusion can enhance the detection capability for dim infrared targets, processing across all spectral regions leads to increased computational complexity, resulting in time-consuming and redundant detection algorithms. In response to this challenge, we propose an efficient multispectral infrared dim target detection framework based on slice registration. The framework consists of a reference spectral rapid localization module (RSLM) and a multispectral feature enhancement detection network (MFE-Net). The latter includes a feature extraction module, a multispectral information-weighted fusion module (MIWF), and a detection module. Initially, potential target locations in the image are rapidly identified through the reference spectral rapid localization module, and corresponding image slices are extracted from other spectral bands based on spectral coordinate transformation. Subsequently, the multispectral feature enhancement network's feature extraction module processes these multispectral target slices to extract features from each band. Finally, the MIWF module integrates information from different spectral bands to enhance the network's sensitivity to infrared dim targets, allowing the multispectral feature enhancement detection network to conduct precise detection, reduce false alarms, and improve detection rates. The proposed method utilizes the reference spectral rapid localization module to reduce the complexity of multispectral data fusion, while the multispectral feature enhancement detection network leverages information from different bands to enrich target features, thereby enhancing the accuracy of weak infrared target detection. Experiments conducted on a comprehensive dataset demonstrate that this method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in terms of detection probability (Pd) and false alarm rate (Fa).

Aiming at the problems of large amount of calculation and insufficient detection accuracy in the existing infrared ship detection methods with sea and sky background,a method for fast detection of infrared ship targets using projection method is proposed. Firstly,the median filter is used to smooth the image to improve the signal-to-noise ratio,and then the infrared image is converted from gray image to binary image to obtain edge information. Secondly,the edge points are sampled in the edge image by region, and a straight line is fitted to detect the sea antenna in the image. Finally,the sea antenna in the edge image is eliminated,so that the ship target can be better separated. When the position and size of the ship target are detected,the projection method is used for dimension reduction calculation to improve the speed. The edge points of each line of the image are accumulated in the horizontal direction to screen out the range of potential targets. Then the edge points of each column of the image are accumulated in the vertical direction to narrow the range of potential targets. Because multiple ship targets may exist in the horizontal or vertical direction of occlusion,the second projection can be carried out in the horizontal and vertical directions to eliminate the occlusion and further narrow the range of potential targets. The shape of the target is represented by the ratio of the length and width of the area where the potential target is located, the size of the target is approximated by the area of the potential target area, and the location of the target is approximated by the center of the potential target area. The proposed method has small amount of calculation, and can improve the real-time performance of ship target detection. Experimental results show that the proposed method is suitable for ship target detection in infrared imagery with sea and sky background, and has high detection accuracy and fast detection speed.

Infrared small target detection is crucial in various applications, such as nighttime vessel inspection, disaster warning systems, and others. Compared with traditional object detection tasks, infrared scenes present distinctive challenges. First of all, due to the target’s distance or shape, the proportion of the target is exceedingly small and the information of the background is complex. Generally, the target comprises a few pixels in extreme cases. Second, the targets in infrared detection tasks are typically sparsely distributed and low contrast contains only a few instances, each of object occupies a minuscule portion of the entire infrared image. Meanwhile, the processing system has high requirements for real-time and multi-frame performance is difficult to achieve. In order to solve the above problems, we proposed a novel Detection Transformer network (DETR) for infrared images, which integrates the efficient transformer and a novel scale sequence attention mechanism (ETSS-Net). The contributions of this work can be summarized as follows: (1) with the success of Transformers in computer vision tasks, recent studies try to optimize the complexity of Transformers in the detection tasks. However, the variants of the Transformers still have higher considerably parameters than some lightweight convolutional neural networks. According to this idea, we designed a self-attention Transformer block, which we called Frequency-based Intrascale Feature Interaction (FIFI). It is inspired by the interaction and expression of frequency information between image pixels. (2) Second, we propose a plug-and-play dimension scale selection module (DSSM) to maintain the balance between detection speed, effect, and the number of parameters and to make the proposed SLAM improve the performance of detection model, and it can simultaneously incorporate both spatial and channel information in the training processing, as well as local and global information. (3) The proposed ETSS-Net improved the detection performance of infrared small targets. The feature learning ability of this model can be well enhanced by the designed backbone Transformer and attention mechanism. Experiments on numerous infrared datasets proved that the proposed method could improve the expression effect and detection ability of the small target detection method. Meanwhile, our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both accuracy and parameters.

Infrared imaging systems play an important role in many fields. With the increasing demand for system miniaturization, infrared computational imaging technology achieves aberration correction through image restoration algorithms, becoming an effective way to simplify system configuration. The accurate modeling of detector noise is a critical step in infrared computational imaging technology, and its precision directly impacts the efficacy of image restoration. This article elucidates the random noise model of pyroelectric detectors through experimental research and proposes a dynamic noise model to enhance the performance of infrared computational imaging systems. The study initially established a noise testing system for pyroelectric detectors, designed to operate under various temperature conditions in accordance with the specifications of infrared detector noise testing. Subsequently, it conducted a comprehensive analysis of the detectors' noise characteristics. The test results indicate that the random noise conforms to a Gaussian distribution without Poisson components. Furthermore, as integration time and detector temperature increase, the noise demonstrates linear and exponential growth trends respectively. Building upon these findings, dynamic noise models were integrated into imaging noise simulations. Results show that compared with traditional single random noise models, the newly proposed dynamic model improves peak signal-to-noise ratio by 9.17dB, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing performance within infrared computing imaging systems. Through extensive exploration into random noises associated with pyroelectric detectors and proposing dynamic models for such noises, this paper not only advances understanding regarding their characteristics but also presents novel strategies for optimizing infrared computational imaging systems—offering significant theoretical significance and practical value.

On-site rapid detection technology for water pollution is becoming one of the important techniques in water pollution detection due to its real-time, high-efficiency, and flexibility advantages, which are suitable for emergency response and on-site decision-making during sudden water pollution incidents. Spectroscopic rapid detection technology based on Raman scattering is becoming one of the most suitable techniques for on-site rapid detection of water pollution due to its advantages of not requiring sample pretreatment, fast measurement speed, and the ability to detect micro and trace components. The portable Raman rapid analyzer for water pollution developed by the project team consists of a fiber Raman probe, laser module, laser power control module, spectrometer, host computer, and lithium battery power system. The overall design of the instrument is a box, which is portable, safe, and stable, enabling on-site sampling and detection. For polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organic phosphorus pesticides in the national standard, the detection limit of water pollutants can reach the ppm level, with an average detection time of less than 1 minute. The supporting software developed by the project team can perform preprocessing operations such as smoothing filtering and baseline correction on Raman spectra, facilitating on-site analysis and detection results for users. The software is connected to a database and allows users to add, delete, modify, and query data, making it convenient for users to establish or use the database to complete subsequent qualitative and quantitative analysis. The software has the function of establishing and saving standard curves, facilitating quantitative analysis of water pollutants by users. The software also has a integrated positioning function, where each spectral data comes with location and timestamp information to ensure data authenticity and traceability. Additionally, the software can connect to a cloud platform to complete remote data transmission and reception, enabling remote and online measurements.
