Abstract
Pseudocolor enhancement of gray scale images from ultrasound, X-ray, or any other single parameter imaging modality has not gained widespread clinical use. Color has found some acceptance where more than one parameter is imaged, as in Doppler blood flow visualizations. Recently, the frequency variation of ultrasound echoes from tissue has been shown to be useful for both measuring attenuation and for enharlciing the apparent resolution of amplitude gray scale images of small tissue structure . In order to separately observe these effects, we have treated the backscatter amplitude and frequency as independent variables and have created a color display which observers find both pleasing and useful.
